#SECONDHANDSEPTEMBER
SURE, we're not a second hand brand, but we've always championed the benefits of slow fashion. Here's our thoughts 💚.
PLEDGE TO MAKE A CHANGE.
For anyone that's not aware, this month marks the celebration of all things sustainable. As part of the conversation, Oxfam have launched their own campaign - #secondhandseptember where they ask consumers to pledge to shop only second hand for 30 days or more, with the aim of giving clothes a longer life by keeping them from landfill.
BUT,
It’s not enough to just buy second hand, independent or ethical fashion. If you’re still buying wastefully, without longevity in mind, it’s a problem. Sure the likes of Depop are great, but it’s not necessarily encouraging people to slow down in the way they buy, if anything it’s enabling consumers to purchase quickly with less guilt about how long they intend to wear it.
SO with that in mind, this month should also be about highlighting people’s mindsets when shopping. Do you reeeally love that dress, will you wear it multiple times for years to come or just send it to the charity shop when you’re bored of it? Unfortunately that’s still wasteful guys.
WRAP say that by extending the life of a garment by just 9 months, it can reduce its water, waste and carbon footprint by around 20%. That's pretty amazing if you think about it.
SO WHAT TO DO?
If you want to make some changes, try to buy consciously and aim for a long term wardrobe of staple garments you’ll wear for months/years to come. That includes buying from high street fashion. Not everyone can afford premium garms, but just because it's cheap, doesn't mean it's life span in your wardrobe is any less deserving. It's all about acknowledging and shifting habits.
Essentially, change your mindset and the rest will follow 💕
